The stay combines a roughly 90-year-old family home, renovated as the main house, with a newly built annex, so you get both a traditional townhouse and modern living space.

The whole-house plan includes both the main house and the annex and sleeps 1 to 12 guests. The main house has tatami rooms.

Cook for yourself

No meals are served, but the annex living-dining room has an open kitchen with fridge, microwave, IH cooktop, rice cooker and cookware, plus a washing machine, which makes longer stays easy.

Kanayamachi is the only district in Japan designated an Important Preservation District as a metal-casters' town. Takaoka casting began here in 1609, and latticed townhouses line its cobblestone street.
