A 13-room inn in a Wakasa Bay fishing village, devoted to sea and food

Seafront detached suites

The detached wing, a converted former communal bath, holds three suites that each take a whole floor. One has a semi-open-air ceramic tub facing the sea, one an infinity bath that seems to flow into the bay, and one a mortar tub overlooking the sea and village.

Wakasa guji and fugu

Obama was once a 'Miketsukuni', supplying seafood to the imperial court, and the courses draw on that larder. Spring to autumn brings kaiseki built around Wakasa guji (tilefish) and Wakasa beef; the colder months feature Wakasa pufferfish farmed in pens right in front of the inn, plus Echizen crab.

A village-revived ryokan

When the ryokan at the entrance of Ano village closed, residents and a local development company renovated it into a new hotel. The project was directed by Tatsuro Iwasa of Satoyama Jujo, with architecture by Shigenori Uoya.

Dog-friendly room

Room 121 on the annex ground floor welcomes guests travelling with their dog, with a queen bed and a shower booth.

Scheduled shuttle from JR Obama Station (book ahead) or taxi; about 10 min by car from Obama IC
