The ryokan occupies a renovated L-shaped alley of machiya townhouses built over 110 years ago, about 1,400 sqm in all. At dusk, paper lanterns light the stone-paved path, evoking Kyoto's old hanamachi districts.

23 rooms, 23 private baths

Each of the 23 machiya along the lane is a single guest room, and every one has its own semi open-air bath.

Five nature themes

Rooms are themed on bamboo (TAKE), water (MIZU), stone (IWA), flower (HANA) and leaf (HA). TAKE and MIZU are twins with a ground-floor living room and upstairs bedroom; IWA, HANA and HA are deluxe rooms with a ground-floor king bedroom and an upstairs tatami room.

Dashi chazuke breakfast

An optional breakfast of dashi chazuke uses rice from a Kyoto rice merchant dating back to the Edo period and a bonito broth. Request it at the front desk by 9 pm the day before.
