A restored former clinic

A building long used as a doctor's clinic has been turned into three units: Gawahan (riverside), Naka (middle) and Oku (inner). It sits between the Kurashiki Mingeikan folk craft museum and the Japan Folk Toy Museum.

T4: riverside loft (64㎡)

The upper floor of a building said to be a Meiji-era merchant house. Lattice windows look onto the Kurashiki River and its row of townhouses, the thick ridge beam and roof framing are left exposed, and the bathroom has a skylight.

Rooms steeped in mingei

T5 is a tatami room on the upper floor of a Taisho-era townhouse, with calligraphy by Kichinosuke Tonomura, the Mingeikan's first director, in the alcove. T6 is an 80㎡ space in a new building, with windows onto the museum and neighbouring woodland.

Run by a craft gallery

Operator toutou also runs a contemporary craft gallery and the Kurashiki Mingeikan Minami shop selling folk crafts from across Japan. Room furniture includes pieces by woodworker Hitoshi Fujisaki.
