Old house with a garden

The mid-Showa building was once Hayashima's only minshuku inn. From the glass-walled shared tatami room on the ground floor you look out on a Japanese garden with a stone-lined pond.

Igusa rush weaving

Hayashima was once known for growing igusa, the rush used for tatami mats. The guesthouse grows and dyes its own rush and runs a paid coaster-weaving workshop.

Garden-view room upstairs

The second-floor private room for 3 to 4 overlooks the whole garden. The two ground-floor tatami rooms serve as gender-separated dorms or private rooms for 1 to 5, and three upstairs tatami rooms as private rooms for 1 to 2.

Base for Okayama and Kurashiki

From Hayashima Station, JR trains reach Okayama Station in about 10 to 15 minutes and Uno Station, the ferry port for Naoshima, in as little as 28 minutes.

Getting there

About 10-15 min from JR Okayama Station on the Seto-Ohashi/Uno Line to Hayashima Station, then a 5-min walk (no on-site parking)

Best for

Backpackers who want an old Japanese house, the company of fellow travelers, and a base for Kurashiki and the Seto Inland Sea
