A heritage hotel of natural Akita cedar on the shore of Lake Towada

Heritage timber main building

Completed in 1938, the three-story main building of natural Akita cedar was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2003. Eighty shrine carpenters from Akita, Aomori and Iwate competed in its construction.

Built for the lost Olympics

It was one of the hotels built at the government's request to host overseas visitors for the 1940 Tokyo Olympics that never took place. Emperor Showa and the Empress are among the dignitaries who have stayed here.

Lake-view open-air baths

The large baths (Aoba-no-yu and Momiji-no-yu) on the annex's second floor have open-air baths overlooking Lake Towada, plus saunas.

Lake views from every room

Both the cedar-detailed Japanese rooms in the main building and the Western rooms in the annex look out over Lake Towada.

Getting there

Free shuttle (about 15 min, reserve by the previous evening) from JR Bus Towadako Station (Yasumiya); JR Bus 'Oirase-go' from Hachinohe Station takes about 2 hr 15 min
