A Koyasan temple founded in the Heian period

  • 🏯A special head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism and a sub-temple of Kongobu-ji.
  • 📜Founded around 1122 by the monk Jimyobo Shinyo, it still passes on the teachings of the Jimyo-in school.
  • ⚔️It has long held memorial rites for the Takeda, Tsuchiya and Kyogoku clans and keeps portraits of Azai Nagamasa and his wife (Important Cultural Properties).
Gardens by Mori Osamu
2

Gardens by Mori Osamu

  • 🌳The roughly 2,000-tsubo grounds hold more than ten halls and four gardens.
  • 🍁The inner garden and the Hachiyo Garden were designed by garden historian and designer Mori Osamu.
  • 🌸Weeping cherries in spring, hydrangeas in summer, autumn leaves and winter snow mark the seasons.
Tatami rooms facing the gardens
3

Tatami rooms facing the gardens

  • 🪟The lodging is surrounded by four gardens, so every room looks out on greenery.
  • 🖼️Sliding doors are painted by artists such as Kano Tansai, Kano Tsunenobu and Tosa Mitsuoki.
  • 🔑Rooms lock and have heating, TV, a safe, yukata, toothbrush and towels (air conditioning in some rooms).
Shojin ryori without meat or fish
4

Morning service and sutra copying
6

Exploring the grounds
7

Exploring the grounds

  • 👣An osunafumi site lets you walk on sand from all 88 Shikoku pilgrimage temples.
  • 🔔The bell tower, built in 1909, holds a bell of an unusual design.
  • 🏛️The plastered main hall has painted panels on its coffered ceiling.
