1

A small inn at the far end of Nakao Highlands

  • 🏔️A six-room inn at the very end of Nakao Highlands in Shinhotaka Onsen, Okuhida Onsengo, at about 1,100 m above sea level.
  • 👫Opened in 1970, it is now run entirely by the owner couple.
  • 🌲The guest rooms were extensively renovated in 2006, and in winter the whole building is heated using hot-spring heat.

A steam-fed spring over 90°C

  • ♨️The source erupts as steam at 94.9°C; the water is clear with a faint sulfur scent, a sodium-chloride spring.
  • 💧It is cooled only by heat exchange and added water, then flows through without chlorination or recirculation.
  • 🌡️The salt coats the skin and holds in heat, so you stay warm long after bathing.
Six private baths, no reservations, no time limits

Six private baths, no reservations, no time limits

  • 🔑Two open-air baths, two large indoor baths and two small indoor baths are all private; use any free one 24 hours a day without booking.
  • 🍃In the forest are the roofed open-air bath Mae-no-yu and the roofless Oku-no-yu that opens straight onto the woods.
  • 🪟There is also Morimi-no-yu with two glass walls, the lie-down Neyu bath, and two cozy wooden tubs.
Every room faces the mountains

Every room faces the mountains

  • 🛏️Four of the six rooms are doubles with about 8 tatami of futon space, rocking chairs, a coffee table, a washbasin and a flush toilet.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧Family rooms come as a 3-person room (about 8 tatami plus a living area) and a 4-person room (about 10 tatami plus a living area), with washlet toilets.
  • 🛌Futons are laid out before check-in; all rooms are non-smoking with air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
Dinner cooked by the owner couple

Dinner cooked by the owner couple

  • 🥩The house specialty is roast beef made from A5-grade Hida beef, slow-cooked for 6 to 7 hours.
  • 🐟Daily-changing Japanese-Western menus use local produce, wild vegetables and mushrooms they forage, and Hida home cooking, ideal for longer stays.
  • 🔥Breakfast features hoba miso grilled over charcoal; meals are served in the dining room, not in guest rooms.

Lobbies and facilities

  • 🛋️The ground-floor lobby has a sofa set for reading the paper or relaxing after a bath.

In a six-room inn in the forest, you can enjoy six private baths of free-flowing spring water as much as you like. Rooms have no private bath, so bathing is in the private baths, and only one group with preschool children is accepted per day.
