Japan's autumn foliage (koyo, 紅葉) moves in the opposite direction from cherry blossoms. While sakura travels north from the south, koyo starts in Hokkaido in September and sweeps south over two months, reaching Kyoto and Kyushu by early December. The foliage at Tofuku-ji and Eikan-do is the most famous in all of Japan, which means booking competition is fiercest here too. Reserving six months out isn't an exaggeration. Booking Timing and Practical Tips
- Book Kyoto in November six months ahead; two to three months ahead is safe everywhere else. Foliage season is when domestic Japanese travel demand peaks.
- Peak-color forecasts shift by one to two weeks each year. Weekday stays plus a flexible schedule raise your odds of catching the peak.
- The onsen town "next to" a famous foliage spot is often the smarter play. Lodging right at the landmark is pricey and crowded, while a town 30 minutes away is quiet and affordable.
- Evening illuminations (temples opening at night) are a highlight of Kyoto's foliage season — book the earliest dinner seating at your ryokan (around 5:30–6pm) so you can catch the light-up afterward.
