Yufuin (由布院) is a small hot spring town in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, tucked at the foot of Mount Yufu. It's best known abroad as the picturesque getaway reached from Fukuoka by the Yufuin no Mori limited express, but within Japan it has long topped surveys of the onsen town women most want to visit. Rather than growing around large hotels, Yufuin developed around small, high-end ryokan — a rare hot spring town whose brand is quietness itself.
Yufuin's appeal is its compactness — onsen, strolling, and museums are all within walking distance of each other. A perfect one-night trip is entirely possible without a car.
What Yufuin Is Like
- Lake Kinrin (金鱗湖): a small lake famous for the mist that rises off it at dawn. It's the highlight of a morning walk before breakfast at your ryokan.
- Yunotsubo Street: a 1.5 km walking street running from the station to Lake Kinrin, lined with craft workshops, dessert shops, and boutiques. (It gets crowded by day, so the real privilege of staying overnight is having the quiet morning and evening street to yourself.)
- Mount Yufu views: a twin-peaked volcano visible from almost anywhere in town. A ryokan whose outdoor bath looks out on Mount Yufu is the classic Yufuin view.
What's the Water Like?
Yufuin's water comes from some of the highest-output springs in the country (Oita Prefecture ranks #1 in Japan for hot spring output), and it's mostly gentle simple-spring water — mild and easy on the skin. It suits children, onsen beginners, and long soaks equally well. If you're hoping for a strong sulfur smell, pair your trip with neighboring Beppu instead.

Just a few minutes' walk to the street and the lake. If evening strolls and café-hopping are the point of your trip, stay here. It's the most popular area, so it also books up fastest.
The Outskirts (Countryside) — Built for Privacy
Scattered among rice fields and groves are high-end ryokan built as standalone hanare cottages, often each with its own private outdoor bath and garden — a setup that consistently scores highest with couples and anniversary trips. Many run a shuttle service from the station, so check for it when you book.
Getting There
- 1Fukuoka (Hakata) to Yufuin: about 2 hours 20 minutes on the Yufuin no Mori limited express. Every seat is reserved — book about a month ahead.
- 2A highway bus from Fukuoka Airport is also convenient, at about 1 hour 40 minutes (reservation required).
- 3From Beppu, it's about an hour by bus or train. Pairing one night in Yufuin with one night in Beppu is the gold-standard Kyushu onsen route.
